Godly sorrow
This phrase in 2 Corinthians 7:10 speaks of true repentance as contrasted with the sorrow of the word. The Greek word translated sorrow (lupe) is also translated heaviness Romans 9:2; 2 Corinthians 2:1. Grief 1Peter 2:19 and grievous Hebrews 12:11. Godley sorrow concerns itself with God. It means to change one's mind and attitude toward God, to Sorrow for the fact that one has sinned against Him. It is the product of the Word of God
2 Corinthians 7:8; it was the apostle's inspired letter which produce repentance in the Corinthians. It result's in a change in one's actions 2 Colossians 7:11. The sorrow of the world, on the other hand, concerns itself with self and with temporal loss. It is merely to Sorrow for the trouble that one sins have brought upon oneself and upon others. Thus it does not result in salvation or sanctification, but only in death 2 Colossians 7:10. Judas, who betrayed Christ, had to Sorrow of the world over his actions, and he hung himself Matthew 27:3-4. If he had godly sorrow, he would have turned to God in repentance and faith and then be saved.
